Hey hey!!
This past weekend, Kairos girls had some really good (and cheap!) dim sum at Joy Luck Restaurant in Oakland. Yeeeuh!

That's what I'm talkin' bout!
It was soooo good (and cheap!) that even Timmy was lovin’ it! Made mom proud… when he pointed to the good ol’ chinese dim sum delight – Chicken Feet!

Timmy's lovin' this!

Then the (bold and adventurous) 10 of us headed out to SF for some biking fun near the Golden Gate Park!

Outside of Bike & Skate

Our not-so-normal selves.
Join us next time!

Translation: The beach was fun! OOOH yeah!

Ahhh.. YES.... the PERFECT weather for a beach outing!
Two Saturdays ago, a bunch of us Kairos folks went to Montara State Beach in Pacifica and it was SPECTACULAR!
Friday’s Forecast: 58 degrees as a high; rain w/ chance of showers; cloudy; DREARY
Saturday’s Forecast: 67 degrees as as high; PERFECT w/ a chance of PERFECT clouds and PERFECT sunshine, no rain and SPECTACULAR!
Sunday’s Forecast: 55 degrees as a high; rain w/ chance of thunderstorms; GLOOMY
Haha, others laughed at Rick when he said we’re goin’ to the beach. “Gosh, it’ll be dang cold!” “It might rain!” “Noooo… you’re goin’ to the beach in this weather?!” But lo and behold! Pleasantly surprised w/… yes you guessed it… PERFECT weather, all of Kairos headed on over to the beautiful coast along Hwy 1 and cruised on down to Montara Beach. Beauteous.
Once we got our feet, pants, and shoes filled w/ sand trekking down to setup camp, we played a few games of volleyball, football, frisbee and our very own frisball (invented by some of the girls) – combination of catch frisbee and football. Yay! The bold and adventurous type even went down to see if they could catch some crabs! To no avail, the crabs took the bait… but didn’t really take the bait (if ya know whudda mean). They were smarter than we thought and escaped unscathed!
The lean, mean, cooking machines – Yang and Rich Leung (Kairos 3) cook up a storm. [Note Yang sticking his left hand into the grill, yeah... he's ready to cook.]

Yang looks SERIOUS.
And here’s when Volleyball gets a little more serious…

Close call!
This is what happens whenever the VBall falls off the slight ledge…. our guys run to try to save it before the waves get to it. As Johnny is running towards the slope, note the VBall is still behind him IN the waves! And if you can imagine us standing and watching and of course… YELLING at him to get the ball before it’s too late! Quite a scene…

Ahh yes… the good schtuff. Hot links, rice pilaf, good ol’ chili, grilled veggie pack, and some good fun!

He he hearty....

What a blast!

Mikaela in the sand...

Finale!

For this year’s Valentine’s Day of Compassion, Kairos 1 went to a convalescent home in Berkeley, with 10 students and 7 staff. We interacted with about 15+ residents from the center. Those that came to the program seemed to have really enjoyed the songs & the message & the frames that we passed out as gifts. One grandpa came up to the front to do the motions with us and he has such a fun time. It was as if it was his first time listening to lively song in a long time. I saw one grandma really trying to read the words to the songs that we were singing, and a few grandmas were listening and nodding as Jessica I. gave her message about God’s love story. I talked to grandma E. in one of the rooms who was paralyzed & had a cataract (so she could only see through one eye) extensively – listening to her life story, her life as a Christian in Berkeley, her family, what she does right now in the center, her hope of heaven, about my life, my expecting child, etc. She sang songs of how she cannot live without the Lord and Amazing Grace, and she was so appreciative that I offered to pray for her at the end, saying that young people usually don’t offer prayers when they visit (only the older people). She kept on thanking God for our visit to her and she even prayed for blessing upon us and for my health/baby as well. I was moved to tears and convicted that God is the only one who can give such hope, peace, and love even at the end of one’s life and one is physically deteriorating.
James shared: The old lady I was talking to suffers from short term memory loss. She repeated her name at least 10 times and asked me for my name about the same number of times as well. S.P. is a name I won’t forget for a long time. At first she didn’t talk much, except for repeating her name and the name of the church that she used to be part of. When asked how long has she been at the elderly care center, she said it was her first day. After I introduced myself for a little bit she started inquiring about what church we are from. Shortly before Jessica gave her message on God’s love, I was able to read to grandma S. the lyrics to the songs that we were going to sing. “Your love is warmer than the summer sun, amazing love, brighter than the autumn leaves, amazing love, purer than the winter snow, amazing love, and it all spring back to me, amazing love.” She chuckled. “Your love is deeper than my view of grace, higher than this worldly place, longer than this road I travel, wider than the gap You filled. Nothing can separate us, nothing can separate us from your love.” At that point, tears started trickling down from her eyes and she asked me to get her a tissue. As Jessica was giving the message grandma S. kept nodding. After the message when I asked her what she thought of it, she said it was very touching. But soon forgot all that Jessica talked about due to her short term memory loss. But as I reiterated the story to her, that same beautiful smile resurfaced on her face. I was able to pray for her towards the end. She was so excited that she interrupted me in the middle of my prayer to ask if her friend sitting next to her would like to join us in the prayer as well. Our presence and conversation with the grandmas over there may have brought them much joy, but I firmly believe that the story of God’s love for each one of us spoke more dearly to their hearts. They may forget our names and our faces, but hopefully, they won’t forget that there’s a loving Father watching over them.
Jason shared: I was really blessed by the privilege of being able to go to the convalescent home on V-day of Compassion. I got to see another part of God’s heart for people through the experience. Being able to talk to one of the residents with Tony was especially rewarding because I was able to experience how the three of us have something in common despite our different backgrounds because of the love of God. I am so thankful for being encouraged by this experience because it reminded me that God’s love is pure enough to cross all kinds of boundaries.
Bethany shared: My experience at the center this year was sobering and humbling, where I discovered that no message about our sins and God’s grace is “too simple” for us to hear. Initially, I was jerked to the crushing reality that we, as human beings, are not invincible—the reality that we are all (or will be) subject to a relentless barrage of aging, sickness, disease, and death. The reality that we cannot rely on our youth, health, or material privilege to get us through our lives, and that all beauty fades with time. This is the “reality” from one visit to a convalescent home. But there was another reality that was left standing: at the end of our lives is our eternal God, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This is the reality that he saves us all from our sins and our broken lives and histories, if we let Him in—and that he gives us true eternal life, despite our age, state of health, mental capability. This was the message that center residents heard, and the message, “simple” or not, that we all need to hear, young or old.
